Help me Understand

As some of you may already know, Ryan Coe is battling for his life. I hope that you all can take one moment of your time to pray for him. As a friend of Michele's, I cannot begin to express my deep sadness about what this must be like for her, a mom. I know that we have all suffered tragedy in our lifetime and I know that death is inevitable for all of us. But I don't understand why a mother loses her child; her teenage child at that. And how, then, does she go on believing that God had a plan; and what possible plan could that be when someone so young and innocent is taken from you. I am so sad for Michele and I cannot begin to fathom how she has, or can continue to believe that God is good. There have been times when I have questioned my own faith, and ultimately I continue to believe. But this has hit me so hard. My heart aches for her and at the same time I feel guilty or selfish for praising God that I have two healthy children. And I DO praise God every single day. Why are we so blessed only to know that in an instant our blessings can be taken away? I just don't get it.

Well, I can see that things are really taking off here! Wow... ummm...
Seriously, our hearts go out to Michele's family and all who are watching the struggle. How does anyone live with this? Where do you go with the pain? How do you pray?

Ok. If we stay here, that's where the blog will stay. See the next post...

All I can do is pray. I have no answers. The terror and sadness that I feel at the prospect of losing a child paralyzes me. And so I pray. For Michelle, for myself, for my family.

I've been meaning to post a reply for a while, but haven't made the time. Not that I really have time right now, but I'll take a stab, anyway. Only if it means y'all will start posting more ;-)

I don't believe in a God that is all-powerful, micromanaging the Universe to dole out blessings and curses on people. And I don't believe that human notions of reasons for things happening the way they do are *ever* based on anything but wishful thinking and ill-informed conjecture. Sure, it's in our nature to try to apply our reason and logic to things, which is all fine and good. But the difference between what we can know about reality and the Universe versus what we can never possibly know is so stark that it boggles the mind to think that anyone could ever expect to *know* a reason for something. (i.e. "God put him in my life so I could...") But a good friend once told me that "Why?" isn't the kind of question I should be asking, because it's so often followed by "me" ("Why me?"). Whatever the reason for things happening, the only thing I believe about God with much certainty is that God is loving and caring, that no matter what happens, God conspires to make love and care possible for us. If I ask how I can be loving and caring, rather than why things happen, then I can be a co-conspirator in making sure that the people of the world get the love and care that God is trying to give them. If everyone always had everything they needed and no one ever suffered, love and care wouldn't be necessary... and the joys and sorrows of loving and caring for others give real meaning to life.

Anyway... you asked for some thoughts, and there are mine. Now will y'all start blogging again? ;-)

I agree. That the blog needs to be blogged and that this reason makes sense. Well said. It's hard to explain to some people that God isn't handing out punishments and blessings based on the actions of "me" and "you." The plan is so much bigger than all of us, and I think it turns on the Truth of Free Will and the necessity of Love. What do you think, Bradley?

This is a mobile comment. You know, for test purposes. Feel free to disregard it.
